Jeff Warner's Latest Reports

Large Mouth, Small Mouth, Rock Bass, and Blue Gill were all on beds. Most of the LM on beds were not in the mood so we didn’t waste our time laser bombing them but they were still a ton of other LM not on beds that would hammer the various plastics we were throwing. The SM up shallow on the other hand, were nuts. If a lure even came anywhere close to them or a bed, they would jump all over it. This would be story for fishing the following three days. The Rock bass were like mosquitoes in the shallows as well. This lake is a fish making factory with 15ft of water visibility with grass growing even deeper than that. I expected to see water temps much cooler than the 65-72 degree range we found so I didn’t bring some of my heavy cover gear that would have come in handy for fishing the grass filled bay in the north end.

Started out fishing outside the access ramp up on the NW end of the lake just below the bridge on the shallow docks throwing wacky worms, tubes, jigs, crank baits, and spinner baits. We worked our way past the bridge and into the N. bay section. Wacky worm and tubes seemed to be the most popular lure when pitched to the holes in the grass until Rumrunner started getting hit on a frog in the pads. So I added my newly acquired Bronzeye Jr frog to the line up and started crushing the bigger 3 lb + fish up in the pad fields. Sometimes we would float over a hole in the grass, see fish right next to the boat, could quick drop a tube on them, and they would still kill it. It was like fishing in a hungry aquarium at times. In the evening we decided to make our way to Jim’s dock to see what the rest of the crew was up to and as we stopped to make a few quick casts on his dock and my tube gets slammed by a 3.5 lb smallmouth. Wicked fight ensues and she throws the hook on a nice jump right next to the boat. When we went back out for the last few hours of evening fishing I threw back at the same spot next to the dock and she hit the tube again. This time I managed to put her in the boat for the photo op. As the sun went down I started throwing a chug bug top water bait over the grass by the ramp and picked up a half dozen more LM before we trailer’d the boat for the night. Total fish count for me and Rumrunner, too many to keep track, was easily over 100.

Cloudy, rainy, but still warm.

We decided to try different areas than the day before so we hit a bunch real-estate on the west side about mid lake. Wacky worm seemed to be the player and I couldn’t put it down. Mostly smaller fish 1-2 lb range for the most part until I tied into a monster of a LM. Got her on a long cast into a corner of a cove and didn’t realize how big she really was at first. But as she got close to the boat it was obvious she was every bit of at least 7 lbs. I get along the boat and as Rumrunner gets his hand on the line to guide her in for the grab, she spins around, the hook comes loose, it flies right up, sticks into his ear, and he can’t quit get his hand on her in time. Fortunately it was Rumrunners left ear that was pierced. Damn that was a nice fish. After the dust settled I bring the boat into the area for a closer look and found another big fish cruising around and managed to catch her for a photo op. She went 3.8 lbs and only wanted the wacky worm. We continued down the bank fishing the docks and would catch a least 2-3 fish per dock and a couple more between each it seemed. After doing that for a while we went out to fish around the big island in the middle of the lake that has a few sweat homes on it and caught a ton of cookie cutter SM and a few LM. This area is probably a great summer pattern spot to try. Later in the day we went back up to the northern bay to look for another frog bite and found it again. We really, really like frog’n. Again, we finished out the day throwing topwater around the ramp and caught several more bass. Fish count for the day was ridiculous again.

Light rain, cloudy, windy, and cooler air temps in the 50’s& 60’s.

Went back to find the big fish lost on the previous day. Found her but she wouldn’t go for any of our offers. Caught a ton of cookie cutter bass in deeper 15’ grass with a drop shot and a few on a deep running crank bait. Had a huge SM follow up the crank bait but turn her nose up at it. We planned on getting on the road at noon so we went back up to the pad field for the last hour or so to finish up on the frog pattern and managed a few more good fish. Weather had the fish in a bad mood this day so we only probably had 50 or so fish for the day.
