Follow Route 9 West from Keene about 7 miles, and then take Route 9A into the village of Spofford. Spofford Lake covers about 1.1 square miles and has a circumference of six miles. The lake offers two public beaches: North Shore and South Shore. For the North Shore beach, follow North Shore Road off Route 9A. The beach offers lifeguards during part of the summer and is open from 9 am to 9 pm daily - there is no admission. The sandy beach offers both sun and shade and is rarely crowded. There are bathrooms, grills and picnic tables. If you prefer the south shore, and more amenities, continue on Route 9A and watch for signs for Wares Grove Beach. The large sandy beach is great for toddler and teens with shallow water for a long way out. You'll find a concession stand, volleyball court, basketball, tetherball and a swing set. Wares Grove is open from 9 am to 9 pm, with lifeguards on duty until 6 pm. There is a small admission fee. In addition to swimming, Spofford Lake is a favorite destination for boaters, with one boat launch and a yacht club. It also boasts an island to visit with no houses, only a rope swing. There is a 40 mph speed limit on the lake.
